Sri Krishna Janmashtami 2009 – Celebrations in Home
Sri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated as the appearance day of Lord Sri Krishna. It is observed on ashtami of Krishna Paksh or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Sravana (August – September). This year (2009) it is celebrated on 14th August. The festival is also known as Gokulashtami, Sri Krishna Jayanthi or simply Janmashtami.
Many Hindu scriptures describe Krishna as Bhagavan or the Supreme Person and the Supreme object of Worship. Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev on a dark, stormy midnight in a place called Mathura in North India about 5,000 years ago to end the rule and atrocities of his maternal uncle Kamsa.
