Paryushan Parva – The Festival of Forgiveness
Paryushan parva is celebrated by Jains every year in the month of Bhadrapad (August-September). It is considered as auspicious and sacred time to deepen spiritual consciousness. It is observed as an event to confess for all wrongdoings of the previous years and beg for forgiveness.

Paryushan parva is a ten day festival. Depending upon one’s capacity, the Jains fast for certain days. In Hindu calender Paryushan parva extends from 5th day to 14th day of the Shukla paksha (bright fortnight) of the month. In 2010, Paryushan parva begins from 4th September onwards.
The Philosophy of Paryushan Parva
Paryushan has many meanings. It literally means “abiding” or “coming together.” Jain worshipers consider this festival as the most auspicious. Infact, the other name of jainism is paryushan or the universal religion. It is observed to deepen the self awareness and to know oneself as transcendental to the material body. It aims at the salvation of the soul to the other world.
The festival ordains the Jains to observe the 10 principles of Jainism. This festival puts an end to all the evil propensities in man and gives eternal bliss and peace. Spiritualism becomes alive by the celebration of Paryushan.
Celebrations of Paryushan Parva
Jains celebrate paryushan parva with fasting, reading the scriptures and observing silence. All rungs of jain community participate with full vigor and enthusiasm. They go to mathas and honor the association of monks. Some observe strict fasting from food and water for more than one week.
Spiritual and religious discourses are held where the glories of Lord Mahavir are narrated. They chant the Namokar mantra everyday. Among all this forgiveness is the most important aspect of the celebrations. At the end of fasting, the believers ask for forgiveness for any wrongdoings or violence they may have done in previous year. These celebrations bring harmony in the community and all abide by the motto “Live and Let Live.”
