Vishu 2009, Kerala New Year in 2009

When is Vishu 2009 or the Kerala New Year in 2009? The Kerala New Year 2009 will be celebrated on April 14th.

The Vishu festival is celebrated by Malyalese Hindus in Kerala and in the adjoining areas of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The day falls on the first day of the Malyalam month, Medam. The day also corresponds to the harvest festival of Kerala. It is believed that on this day Kerala was created by the 6th incarnation of Vishnu, Parashuram by making the water of Arabian Sea recede.

How is Vishu or the Kerala New Year Celebrated?
The main attraction of the day of Vishu is Vishukkhani or Kanikanal. The night before Vishu, the eldest member of the family (lady) arrange all the items such as kasavu mundu (traditional cloth), gold coins, raw rice, betal leaves, mirror, mango, jackfruit, banana, Kanikonna (flower) etc in a traditional bowl, Urali. The bowl is then placed in front of the Lord Vishnu or Krishna idol.

The eldest lady of the house sleeps in the puja room for the night. Next day, during the time of Brahma Muhurtha, she immediately after lighting the oil lamp, she looks at the auspicious Urali. The lady then guides all the family members to come into the Puja room after closing their eyes with her own hands. The first thing that all members see is the auspicious Urali. Since the day also marks the New Year day, people also read “Ramayana” after Vishukkhani.

Immediately after Vishukkhani, small amount of money (Vishukkaineetam) along with crackers are distributed among children. People believe that this will bring future prosperity for their children. Tenants and servants also receive some money from elders of the family.

The  Kerala New Year day is also the day of feasting. Special delicacies made of jackfruits, pumpkins, mangoes, etc are prepared. Also food items consisting of equal proportions of sweet, sour, bitter and salt are made.

What Does Vishukkhani Signify?
Vishukkhani signifies the spirit of material and spiritual abundance. The joy of viewing Vishukkhani is not only a treat for our eyes but also a positive influence for our thoughts and actions. It fills our heart with love, happiness and hope for the coming year.

Happy Vishu 2009! May this year be the year of positive abundance to all.
