Ill effects of toxic chemicals in colors used in Holi

Holi colors found in the market primarily consists of harmful chemicals such as oxidized metals or industrial dyes mixed with engine oil. If that does not scare you then let us have a look at the composition of different colors available in the market:

Green: Copper sulphate – This could cause various types of eye irritations or even temporary blindness
Purple: Chromium iodide – This chemical causes allergies and bronchial asthma
Silver: Aluminum bromide – Aluminum bromide is Carcinogenic. Very dangerous…
Black: Lead oxide – Excess if this chemical could cause learning disabilities.
Shiny colors: Powdered glass added to the colors

These toxic chemicals are cause of various types of holi accidents. It can cause allergies, various types of skin problems, eye irritation and even blindness.

In early days holi colors were prepared in a natural way primarily from the flower extracts which used to blossom in spring (holi season). These colors had medicinal values and were actually beneficial for skin.

Gulal which many of you might think to be safe is also hazardous. Gulal primarily consists of a base which is asbestos or silica and a colorant. Both of them are very toxic and could cause serious health problems.
