Bhutan Crowns its Fifth King

Bhutan crowned its fifth king, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, 28 yrs. King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, 52, placed the crown on his son’s head and conferred the title of Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King).

The ceremony was symbolic of the strength of the monarchy, sending signals of reassurance for its existence. Now, of course, the last Buddhist kingdom situated in the Himalayas is opening its doors to democracy and modern influences. The ceremony was conducted in the 17th century fortress Tashichho Dzong, which is both an administrative headquarter as well as a monastic centre.

The king is revered in this country as the savior of the nation. Most of the Bhutanese kings so far were known for their benevolence.
