Pushkar Fair – A Grand Event During Karthik Poornima

‘Pushkar Fair’ is a beautiful 10 days fair celebrated on the occasion of Karthik Poornima, Full Moon day in the month of Kartik, in scintillating desert town of Pushkar. Pushkar is a small town in North Indian state – Rajasthan.
When is Pushkar Fair ?
Pushkar Fair is celebrated for 10 days during Kartik Purnima. But, the last three days are very important in this fair. In 2008, Pushkar Fair is held from November 10th, Monday to November 13th, Thursday.
Pushkar Fair – A Prestigious Festival in Rajasthan :
Pushkar Fair is organized by the Government of Rajasthan. Government of Rajasthan is very successful in making the event bigger and bigger. The number of people participating in the fair has been growing year by year. From around the world, few lakhs of people attend the festival every year. The government makes every effort to celebrate the fair in a peaceful and cheerful manner.
Camel Trade – Eye-Catching Event of Pushkar Fair :
Pushkar Fair is considered as the largest animal trade, especially largest camel trade in the world. From every corner of Rajasthan, lakhs of animals including cows, horses, goats and camels are brought for the trade. A lot of enthusiastic people come to buy the animals in the trade. Among the trades of all animals, camel trade is the most attractive and eye-catching event in Pushkar animal trade and Pushkar Fair.
Exhibition of Rajsthani Cultural Essence :
Apart from the camel trade, the Pushkar Fair is also an occasion to celebrate the cultural essence and traditional etiquette. During the fair, people from all over Rajasthan exhibit their ethnic articles and tremendous handlooms, and sell them for reasonable prices. One of the special attractions in the fair is the cultural beauty of Rajsthani ethnic wear, handlooms and handicrafts.
City of Pushkar – An Open-Air Amphitheatre :
During the Pushkar animal trade, city of Pushkar becomes an open-air amphitheatre exhibiting the ancient culture, folks of village and tribal traditions of typical Rajasthan.
Camel Race – A Mesmerizing Scene :
When the camel trade slows down, organizers conduct a race between camels. This camel race is a fabulous occasion among all the events of Pushkar Fair. First time visitor may feel the pleasure of camel decorations that represent the typical Rajasthani culture. Camels are decorated with colourful saddles, beads and ethnic jewelry.
Ritual Bath in Pushkar Lake :
Ritual bath in bath ghats of Pushkar lake is an auspicious occasion among the Pushkar Fair. It is believed that holy waters of Pushkar lake cleanse oneself of all the sins. There is another belief that these water can cure some skin ailments.
Temple of Lord Brahma :
After bathing, devotees visit the temple of Lord Brahma, which is the only temple for Brahma in the world. There, people worship Brahma by offering prayers. And in the evening, some thousands of butter lamps are lighted and released into the water of Pushkar lake with the help of leaf boats. This is a very pleasant event to watch.
The world’s one of the most celebrated desert festivals ends with the marching of camels with their new owners or masters.
