Indian Decorated Textiles

Indian Decorated Textiles are famous all around the world. These include a wide range of hand block prints, tied-dyed fabrics and painted fabrics. The most popular ones are -

Bandhani/ Tie and Die – This is one of the most sophisticated methods of dying a cloth beautifully. In the olden days it was practiced in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh states of India. The technique of this process is simple, sections of the cloth are tied with silk or cotton thread uniformly and then dunked into liquid color. The tied area doesn’t pick up the color and so you will end up with a pretty motif across the fabric.

Batik Art – Batik is done on a very large scale in Madhya Pradesh. The technique is simple, the fabric is painted with molten wax and then it is dyed in cold dyes. Batik Art Saris, bedcovers, dupattas are very popular across India.

Block Printing – Block printing involves printing on the cloth using carved wooden blocks with vegetable dyes. It is very popular in places like Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Jamdani – Jamdani is the art of weaving in which tiny shuttles filled with colored threads or gold/silver threads are weaved in to produce a very fancy fabric. There are various patterns that are used in Jamdani. Tanda in Uttar Pradesh is the hub of Jamdani.

Ikat: Ikat is a meticulous and complex process of the dying of the wap and weft threads repeatedly dyed before they are woven into the fabric. Ikat weaving is widely popular in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.

Kalamkari – kalamkari means drawing with pen. The fabric is hand painted using vegetable dyes in deep rich shades. Kalamkari fabrics are widely produced in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Orissa.

Laharia – Laharia is a special process that uses the Bandhani technique to create a ripple effect. Laharia fabrics are produced specially in Rajasthan and used extensively on festive occasions.

Tanchoi – Tanchoi is a special style of weaving that resembles fine miniatures. It originated in China and had been relatively Indianized. Its widely practiced in Surat, Gujarat.
