Pearls of Hyderabad
When one speaks of pearls, it inevitable that the name of Hyderabad come with it. The city is famous for the pearls and the pearl jewellery it has produced over the centuries. It is known all over India for the numerous variety of jewellery that is specially made and worn in this city.
The association of pearls with the city of Hyderabad has a historical significance to it. Today, honestly speaking, it is just a myth. It’s rather difficult to find the real pearls here. Hyderabad was a very wealthy princely state before independence and was under the royal patronage of the Nizan rule. The kings of this era had a fetish for jewels of all kinds. They imported jewels and precious stones of all kinds from all over the globe. Not that Hyderabad itself was not a rich source of precious stones. One must not forget that it was this princely state that gave the word the Hope and Kohinoor diamond.
Today, there exists an entire street filled with only pearl shops. Shoppers from all over visit this place to buy pearl jewellery. There are many pieces of jewellery that have combination of pearls and precious stones like rubies, emeralds and diamonds. Some of them have a typical Hyderabadi stamp on them and are worn mostly in Hyderabad. Some of these designs are grown to be associated with the Hyderabadi heritage and tradition.
If you have an eye for pearl jewellery and love to wear it, then Hyderabad is worth a visit. But tourists better be careful of the quality, you might just be cheated into buying fake ones.
