“Sati” at 75

Checher in Kasdol block, in Raipur district, Chattisgarh witnessed the return to medieval times as a 75 year old woman committed “sati” by burning herself to death on the pyre of her 80-year old husband. Unable to bear his death, she felt it prudent to die along with him.

Sati incidentally was a tradition practiced by the Rajput queens when their husbands died at warfare. The tradition now is considered to be inhuman and has long ceased to exist.

Lalmati Verma, burnt herself to death after the mourners at the funeral had left as she was very upset over the death of her husband, Shivanandan Verma.

The local police felt Lalmati Verma might have been inspired to commit suicide by the presence of a “sati” temple built in the memory of Jheek Bai who committed “sati” 40 years ago in Checher.
