9 Colours of Durga Navratri - 2008

Durga Navratri is the most sacred and most celebrated festivity season of India. It has a unique tradition of colors. During the festival, devotees wear different colours that are indicated by the Brahmans and other religious pandits. Generally, the nine colors represent the nine manifestations of Maa Durga. As a part of Durga puja, devotees perform ‘alankarana’ (make up) of the Goddess with the saree of the colour for the day.

Colors of Navaratri :
The colors of Navratri remain same for every region but, the manifestations (forms) and the names of the Goddess may vary from the place to place. Usually the nine Durga Navaratri colors are – Green, Orange, Yellow, Sky Blue, Pink, Grey, Green, Ink Blue, and Royal Blue. On Vijaya Dashami (Dussehra), the tenth day of the festival, Red is the colour of the day.

As, each pandit says differently, please confirm the dates and colours from elders before proceeding. This is the most general procedure.

October 6, Monday – Green – Goddess Dhoomavathi / Goddess Jagadamba
October 7, Tuesday – Ink Blue – Goddess Bagala / Goddess Narayani
October 8, Wednesday – Royal Blue – Goddess Matungi / Goddess Renuka Devi
October 9, Thursday – Red – Goddess Kamala / Goddess Vijaya Durga

In Gujarat, devotees worship the 9 forms of Maa Durga with utmost devotion. They worship the Goddesses – Amba, Tara, Shorashi, Buvaneshwari, Chinnamasta, Bhairavi, Dhoomavathi, Bagala and Matungi.

Nine Manifestations of Maa Durga – Worshipped in Maharashtra During Navratri :
In Maharashtra and in other regions of Western India, devotees worship the 9 forms of Goddess Durga – Amba, Ashtamukhi, Bhuvneshwari, Upang Lalitha, Maha Kali, Jagadamba, Narayani and Ranuka Devi.
