Lord Viswakarma Puja – Worship of Divine Architect

Viswakarma is known as ‘Divine Engineer’ or ‘Divine Architect’ since the Puranic age. To pay respect and devotion, he is worshipped by the engineering community as well as by all professionals. On the day of Viswakarma Pooja, all the workers in the workshops and other offices worship their tools and instruments in front of the image or idol of Lord Viswakarma.

When Viswakarma Puja is Celebrated?
Vishwakarma Pooja is celebrated on the day of Kanya Sankranthi (Kanya Sankraman) which generally falls in September, follows the Ganesh Puja. In 2008, it is celebrated on 17th September, Wednesday.

Legends of Lord Viswakarma Puja :
Viswakarma is the main architect of the universe who built the universe as per the direction of Lord Brahma, the Lord of the creation. According to Hindu religious texts and other sources, he is known as ‘Devashilpi’ or the ‘Architect of Gods’. It is believed that he is not only made the universe but also the earth and the heaven.

Mythology gives descriptive details of some masterpieces of Viswakarma’s creations. He built the mythical town of ‘Dwarka’, the capital of Lord Krishna, ‘Hastinapur’, the capital of Pandavas and Kauravas, and ‘Indraprastha’, the town of Pandavas. It is also said that Viswakarma built ‘Lanka’, a wonderful city of mythological times, for the demon king ‘Ravana’.

Viswakarma – the Creator of Weapons :
It is also believed that Lord Viswakarma created the weapons used in mythological times like ‘Vajra Ayudha’. Lord Viswakarma is considered as best craftsman and he is known for his excellence in designing.

Customs and Celebrations of Viswakarma Puja:
Viswakarma Puja is celebrated mainly by working professionals. They worship Lord Viswakarma by placing their tools and instruments in front of his image or idol and worship the tools as well as the Lord. He is worshipped in a perfect procedural way. After the pooja, the performers of puja distribute ‘Prasad’ to everybody. They sing Bhajans (devotional songs) and dance.
