The Eight Avatars of Indian Classical Dance

Classical dance in India has eight forms, which have their origins in different parts of the country. All classical dances in India have three basic features- Natya, Nritta and Abhinaya.

Natya means the dance-drama. This is the aspect of dance where stories are depicted in dance form. It includes music, dialogues, etc.

Nritta is the technical aspect of dance. The movements and steps form a part of nritta. The nritta aspect of dance varies with the different dance forms.

Abhinaya means expression of the mood of the story. This is a very important aspect of dance. Abhinaya helps in keeping the audience’ interest in the story.It makes them relate to the story being told by the dancer.

There are eight different classical dances in India. They are:

Bharatanatyam – The origin of this dance form is in Tamil Nadu. The music of this dance form is generally carnatic. Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest dance forms in India, which was performed in courts and temples.

Kuchipudi- Kuchipudi is another dance form that originates from South India. This dance is from Andhra Pradesh. Kuchipudi gets its name from that of a small village in Andhra Pradesh.

Oddissi- Oddissi is another dance form that is seen in the eastern parts of the country. This dance always depicts stories of Krishna and Radha.

Manipuri- Manipuri, as the name suggests is from Manipur. The most unique aspect of this dance is the attire. Manipuri dances are based on the Raas Leela.

Kathak- This is a North Indian dance form which is also the national dance of Pakistan.The word ‘Kathak’ means story-teller. This was introduced by the Mughals, to India.

Mohiniattam- It is a dance form from the state of Kerala. The dance form talks of Lord Vishnu’s avathar, Mohini- the enchantress.

Kathakali- Kathakali is also originated in Kerala. This dance involves the usage of elaborate make-up. Traditionally, this dance begins in the evening time and goes on throughout the night.

Sattriya- This is an Assamese dance form. Sattras are the Vaishnava monasteries in Assam.This dance is usually performed in prayer halls of the monasteries.
