Gogamedi Fair – August to September 2008

The Gogamedi fair is scheduled to be held from 16th August 2008 to 15th September 2008 in Ganganagar, Rajasthan. This fair is very intrinsic to the culture of Rajasthan where people gather in huge numbers to sell goods, livestock, crops and even handicrafts.

What makes the fair more spectacular and lively is the influence and presence of dance and music in their utmost rustic forms. Unique to the culture of Rajasthan, the Gogamedi fair is also considered to be an ideal time to find a suitable match for a young girls and boys.

The Gogamedi fair takes place in Rajasthan with the pure aim of paying tribute to two of their regional heroes – Goga Veer and Jahr Peer. Goga, also known as Gogaji, is believed to be a snake God. Every tiny village in Rajasthan is reported to have a Temple that pays tribute to this snake God, Gogaji.

Myths surrounding the worship of the snake God Gogaji say that if anyone gets bitten by a poisonous snake, he or she can be immediately treated off the poison simply by chanting his name.

Rajasthan continues to enjoy the seat of power in tourism with the influx of tourists (both domestic and foreign) increasing at the rate of 50 percent each year. That makes Rajasthan one of people favorite destination spots for people across oceans and miles. The ever engaging fairs, activities and festivals taking place within is an impetus for tourists to come across and be a part of the native traditions, culture and joy that India has thrived on since ages now.
