How To Make A Creative Rakhi

Posted on June 27, 2008 in Festivals by Chris

Rakhi is a festival, which beautifies the relationship between a brother and sister. This festival is something which every brother and sister looks forward to. Instead of buying rakhis from outside, it would be great if one actually made rakhis at home.

You not only have fun, but also have a way of expressing your love and creativity in your own style.

The materials you may be requiring are

1) Silk Threads (any number of them)
2) Scissors
3) Accessories (sequins, glitter, stars etc)
4) Brush
5) Glue

Here are the 5 most basic steps one has to go through in order to make a rakhi. Once through these steps one can definitely add on other accessories and other creative stuff.

1) Get hold of 30-35 inches of silk thread. If you want a colorful rakhi get hold of multi color threads. Now fold these threads into half.

2) The second step requires you to tie a thread around ¼ th of these strings-midway, this would give you an impression of a small face. 3/4th of the strings will be dangling loose, now divide these strings into two and start plaiting them.

3) These strings will look like a face with two long plaits. Now take your scissors and cut this cluster of strings in between. Cut at the midpoint.

4) Take a brush and comb out these loose ends, which are formed in between the rakhi.

5) Now add in sequins, beads, stars, pearls, glitter etc on the middle part of your rakhi. And your rakhi is ready.

There is no limit to your creativity. Try out and explore various options. HAVE FUN EXPERIMENTING.
