Singapore- the Getaway For Indian Travellers

Indian travellers prefer going to Singapore as well as Bahrain for a vacation. One generally thought it was Europe or US, but in 2005 it was undoubtedly Singapore.

This was highlighted in the findings, which were gathered by the World Tourism Organisation, which is a UN Agency that concerns itself with global tourism rankings. These facts were released in the annual publication of the union ministry of tourism, India Tourism Statistics.

In 2005, large number of Indians went to Singapore (583,543), China (356,460), Bahrain (466,849), Thailand (352,766), US (344,926), Britain (269,000) and Hong Kong (273,487).

Considerable increase has been recorded in the number of travelers travelling to Gulf country. In 2000, the number of travellers to Gulf countries was 213,509 and in 2004 it shot up to 418,767.

Another popular tourist spot happens to be Malaysia. Next to Bahrain, the other West Asian countries preferred by Indian tourists are Oman and Saudi Arabia. Switzerland also attracted a large number of tourists. There has been an increase in the number of tourists to Russia as well. In 2000, the number of tourists visiting Russia was 23,476, whereas in 2005, the figure shot up to 42,184.

The maximum number of travellers traveled from the Mumbai airport (28.4%), to be followed by Delhi (21.2%) and Chennai (12.5%). As far as neighbouring countries were concerned,a large number of Indians preferred visiting Sri Lanka (113,323). The number of travellers to Pakistan in 2005 was 59,560.
