Germany’s Social Networking Site, Plazes Acquired by Nokia

As a part of its major push in offering Internet Services, Nokia the Finnish cellphone company agreed to acquire social networking start-up Plazes. Plazes is Germany’s location based social networking website. The value of the deal is yet to be disclosed by Nokia.

Plazes basically provides location-based services which are used by people to plan share and record their social activities. Nokia’s Internet Services Head, Niklas Savander said: “This acquisition helps Nokia to accelerate its vision of bringing people and places closer together, in line with our broader services strategy.”

As more number of mobiles gets equipped with technology pinpointing the user’s location companies like Plazes are trying explore potential for new services. According to Nokia by the end of this year it would have dozens of phone offering the services.

Nokia has offered around $8.1 billion to Navteq, US digital maps firm, a foundation stone for its push in Internet services. Nokia also assures to invest more millions this year and next. With its main operation in Berlin, Plazes is handled with a staff of 13 people.
