Animals Rights Activist Gets Excellence Award

Prominent animal expert Raj Panwani has been selected to receive the 2008 Excellence in Advancement of Animal Law Award for his contribution in securing animal rights in India. His selection was from among members of the American Bar Association, Chicago, consisting of 4.13 lakh members.
The award will be received by Raj Punjwani at the annual meeting of the 2008 ABA to be held at Chicago on August 9.
Several achievements are to the credit of Raj Punjwani such as protecting Olive Ridley turtle rookeries, prohibition of fur trade and skins of wild endangered animals, prohibiting the manufacturing as well as the sale of the shahtoosh shawls. The wool of these shawls is from the Tibetan antelope known as ‘chiru’, which is an endangered species. He also supported the cause for better condition for animals in mobile zoos and circus, improving slaughter house conditions and ensuring that slaughtering methods are scientific.
Punjwani is the founder of the Animal and Environment Legal Defence Fund in India. He is also responsible for the drafting of legislation for governmental purposes such as Performing Animals (Registration) Rules and Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Rules.
Punjwani was born and brought as well as educated in Bhopal.
