Middle- age smokers perform poorly on reasoning and memory tests as compared to non-smokers. This was observed after an analysis of previously accumulated data consisting of 5,000 British civil servants.
The researchers observed that those who smoked were more likely to be at lower performing levels as far as memory, vocabulary, reasoning and verbal fluency was concerned. Smoking was linked to decline in mental faculties in middle age, as in the case of dementia and a number of other physical ailments that emerge later in life.
Severine Sabia and colleagues from the National Institute of Health and Medical research in Villejuif, France associated smoking with deficiency in memory and a decline in the reasoning ability of a person.
Smokers who quit cigarettes were likely to have healthier behaviors, such as less alcohol consumption, more physical activities and higher consumption of vegetables and fruits.
The observed people were between 35 to 55 years at the initial stage of the study. It was difficult to test as many were not willing to be re-tested.
