India – A Top World Murderer

India has attained the distinction of being top in world murder count, with maximum number of murders taking place within the country. The number is three times more than Pakistan and compared to the United States, it is double the figure.
In 2007-08, more than 50 lakh crime incidents were reported, including murder, drug offences as well as rape based on government reports. In India around 32,719 incidents of murder were recorded, whereas in the United States the recorded figures were around 16,692 and in Pakistan there were 9,631cases. These figures, which were put out by the Union Home Ministry, were complied by the National Crime Records Bureau. India was succeeded by South Africa, which recorded 30,960 murders. Austria recorded only 148 murders and Israel 177.
At the same time the rate ( per lakh population) of other crimes and murder as well in India was quite less compared to other countries. In India , the rate of rape and murder is four and three ( per lakh population) respectively. In South Africa, the rate of occurrence of both the crimes was 115.8 and 65.27 respectively.
The maximum number of rape cases was in the United States recording around 93,934. Next in line is South Africa, which recorded 54,926. In India, 18,359 rapes took place. Similarly, In India there were 44,159 sexual offences, 2,70,861 serious assault cases and around 22,814 violent thefts and robberies. Japan recorded the maximum number of robberies.
