No More Saas-Bahu Stuff Please

It’s been 10 years since the Indians are given the same saas-bahu melodrama in variety of forms and manifestations. A decade of putting up with the simple, beautiful, virtuous heroine, larger than life hero often a big industrialist, a vamp with all the make up and jewelry she could ever wear and a big joint family. Phew!

On Zee we have a variety of family dramas right from Saat Phere, Dulhan, Maayka, Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, Rakhi, Meri Doli Tere Angna, Vivaah, Parrivaar..Kartavya ki Pariksha. On Sony we have Babul Ka Aangann Chootey Na, Sujata and Waqt Batayega Kaun Apna Kaun Paraya. On Star Plus we now have Baa Bahoo Aur Ba, Bhabhi, Grihasti, Santaan, Kyunki, and Sangam.

And all these serials air around the same time revolving around the same ideas of marriage, family values, togetherness etc. All the characters seem stereotypical right from the main lead pair to the side actors. Not forgetting Ekta Kapoor the queen of soap operas who churns out similar stuff from her production house.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kasauti Zindagi Ki, Kasammh Se, Kuch Is Tarah, Kayamat, Karam, Kasturi, Kaisa Yeh Pyar Hai, Kahin Toh Hoga, Kesar, Kkavyanjali, Kkoi dil mein hai, Kkusum, Kkutumb, Kalash, Khwahish, Kaise Kahoon, Kya Dil Mein Hai, Kavita, Kashti, Koshish, Kalash, Kamal, Kuch Jhuki Palke, K Street Pali Hil, Kahani Terri Merri and the list just goes on like a menu card in a restaurant. But how would it feel to taste dishes that look almost the same with a slight difference in taste. Ekta’s speciality is to cook the same dish with different ingredients.

But Indian audiences have come of age. Many are resorting to fresh new entertaining stuff like Left Right Left, Dil Mil Gaye, Sarabhai Vs. Sarabhai. Sukanya, a teacher says, “Initially I used to follow these teleserials but I have grown bored out of these repetitive stuff. Almost every serial looks the same and has the same story. I love watching Sarabhai Vs. Sarabhai instead. My daughters have switched to Left Right Left or reality shows. I think its about time that these channels come up with fresh stuff.”
Sorry folks, Ekta Kapoor and Himesh Reshammiya are two people who will never ever stop torturing people with the same stuff.
