Marwar Festival, 2008-the Colorful Festival of Jodhpur, Rajasthan

The Marwar Festival of Jodhpur, Rajasthan is celebrated to glorify the past brave heroes of the state. The festival celebrations lasts for 2 days and it falls in the Hindu month of Ashwini (September-October). For 2008, it falls on 13th and 14th October, Monday and Tuesday.

The main highlight of the festival is the captivating folk music of Rajasthan and dances of the Marwar region that tells the passionate, romantic and adventurous lifestyle of the rulers of Rajasthan. This classical folk music of the state known as Maand that is why the festival is also called as ‘Rajasthan Maand Festival.’

The entire city of Jodhpur becomes colorful with lively celebrations of the festival with much fanfare. The dances and other cultural programmes performed on the occasion are exclusive to the state of Rajasthan. The venue of this festival includes the famous Umaid Bhawan Palace, Mehrangarh Fort and Mandore.

The performers present some of the most difficult and daring dances that shock the spectators. In one type of dance the performers balance eight to ten pots on their heads while dancing gracefully and balancing themselves on the edge of a sword!

The golden times of Rajasthan’s past is beautifully presented through these colorful dance and music festival. One can truly feel as though the entire surrounding is completely transformed into the glorious past of the state. The performers give the spectators a clear picture of the days of yore, battles and the great heroes who are still alive through their songs. Other attractions of the Marwar Festival include horse riding, camel tattoo shoe, horse polo and other competitions.
