The “Sao Joao” festival is known to be a very famous festival in Goa. Celebrated as the feast of St John the Baptist, this feast is very different compared to the other church held feasts.
Goa is a country known for its vibrancy and festive nature, every occasion of celebration is celebrated with great joy and vigour.
During this festival, the people of Goa express their happiness by jumping into a well and splashing water around. They decorate their heads with crowns of flowers and leaves called as “ Copel ”.
Newly married couples are the ones who have the most fun on this feast. Son-in-laws have a great feast at their mother-in-laws place. The bride goes about distributing goodies and fruits to all the youth of the village, whereas the groom has fun with his pals by distributing and consuming hard drinks like the beer and most importantly the Goan “Feni”.

Mothers gift their daughters a basketful of fruits like the pine-apples, jack fruits, mangoes etc. A procession is carried around the village, and when a lake or a pond arrives, people jump into the water and have fun.
Celebrated on the 24 th of June, every goan looks forward to this festival.
