Beta test of Skype’s VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) application for mobile phones has been released. This application can easily work on at least 50 Java-enabled mobile phones from companies like Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and Motorola.
The beta version of Skype is easily available in worldwide market. The main features of this beta version of Skype include:

- Receiving calls from Skype users and SkypeIn
- Chat
- Group chat
- Presence that is viewing contacts who are online
Initially additional feature such as from mobile handsets making Skype to Skype and SkypeOut calls is supported by 7 markets. These include UK, Poland, Brazil, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Estonia.
For Skype users all the activities like calling and chatting is free. But activities like calling non-Skype user or receiving call from a non user will be charged as per the regular Skype rates. When the user uses mobile handsets for calling Skype to Skype or SkypeOut; mobile operator charges for local mobile calling minutes and data usage. This is because user is using the mobile voice and data networks.
In case you want to download beta version of Skype then there are 2 methods: 1st is direct over-the-air download to a Java-enabled mobile and 2nd way is download it on your PC then transfer it to your phone. Although the software is free of cost but in case you download it directly on your mobile then your operator might charge you.
It is expected that the beta test of Skype will last for months. After completion of the beta test, public version of the Skype VoIP will be available in the market. Final date of the release of public version of Skype VoIP is yet not declared by the company.
