The funding in orthopaedics is less, compared to other diseases, so lack of funds is a major impediment towards making improved treatment available as R&D requires lot of funding. Most of the equipment and medicines are imported and the duty imposed on such imports is high. Therefore, it is quite costly for the people to avail such treatments. Still efforts are being made by German companies to set up companies or to take over promising companies and seek ISO certification to make quality treatment available in India.

The spinal and hip problems are mostly found in US and the market is good there because the health expenditure is high.
