Sri LankaThe laying of a transmission line under the sea in order to connect the power distribution networks of India and Sri Lanka so that that supply of electricity from one country to the other is feasible when either of the country faces shortage is being planned by the respective Governments.

The cost of the project would be Rs. 2,292 crore and would be completed within 42 months of getting investment approvals, according to a report presented by the Indian state-owned transmission utility PowerGrid.

The plan is to lay a power cable under the Gulf of Mannar between Talaimannar on the left flank of the islands of Mannar in Sri Lanka and Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu. In India, the undersea cable will be linked to the southern grid located at Madurai via an overhead transmission line. In Sri Lanka, the underwater cable will be connected to the country’s network at Anuradhapura via an overhead line. The link laid will be similar to telecom and internet cables that are found in ocean beds all over the world.India

The link will be well protected against electrocution in case sharks and ship anchors damage it. An optic-fibre cable will also be placed alongside the main power cable in order to keep a watch on the link.

Being a long- term project, the detailed report highlights the cost that is to be shared by both the countries. The project is meant to promote regional integration through the use of electricity.
