The Olympic torch ritual, passing through 70 hands, went off peacefully in New Delhi, thus reinforcing India’s commitment to China to ensure a peaceful rally. It was a short distance run from Vijay Chowk to India Gate. Celebrated Indian tennis stars, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi lit the Olympic torch light.
The Tibetans continued their protests peacefully on the side all over Delhi, whereas the torch relay went off peacefully without any disruptions. The only observers who saw the torch were the 15,000 odd policemen who were protecting the torch and the participants.
The relay was disrupted in London and Paris. Both the world, as well as China, were watching to see if such a situation also occurred in Delhi. But it did not due to the efforts of the intelligence agencies. India has been providing shelter to 150,000 Tibetan refugees as well as the Dalai Lama.
Observers feel that that the Chinese hold the view that the Dalai Lama was a puppet of the Indian Government. Furthermore, they feel it is the Dalai Lama, instigated by the Indian Government, who has been destabilizing the hold of China on Tibet and encouraging Indian expansion there.
